The 6th Ordinary Sunday
From Fr. Ben’s Desk
The first time I arrived at St. Aloysius a year ago, I made my visitation to our church and was left mesmerized due to the prayerful ambience the church embraced. This beautiful and prayerful church was built in 1913 and now it enjoys it’s hundred and five years old history this year. Before the current church was dedicated, the first assignment was made in 1876 by Bishop John Loughlin, the first Bishop of Brooklyn. We are appreciative to the first Bishop, the first Pastor, Reverend Patrick Sheridan, and the first parishioners who allowed our parish to exist, because without their dedication, we would have not been able to enjoy having it. The early Church's gathering was held in catacomb in Rome, the grave site in the deep caved place where the normal people would have wanted to avoid going into. The early Christians chose to gather in the deserted place for fear of the Roman. Far before the inception of the Church, the original church was gathered around Jesus. The teaching of Jesus in today's Gospel was made somewhere not far from the Lake Galilee. The first followers of Jesus were unable to enjoy having a church built in the way we cherish ours preciously. Jesus was rejected by his home village. His followers were kicked out of their ancestral religious tradition held in a synagogue. Yet, out of their spiritual hunger, the early believers followed Jesus wherever he went regardless. Today, we read the sermon on the land which is a reinterpretation of Matthew's sermon on the mountain. Matthew wanted to describe Jesus as the new Moses and the new commandments while Luke reinterpreted it into more intimately, closer to the people of the earth than the mountain. The mountain is where God is believed to be dwelling while the land is where human beings are living. The core of the message is well expressed in the first reading, "Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD." Jeremiah 17, 7. Jesus is defending the ones who are hungry, who are the weeping, and who are hated. Jesus is portrayed as the defender of all the deprived and the oppressed. The original Church gathered not in the luxurious church like us, but around Jesus and his teachings. Let's build the church of faith and the church of hope around Jesus and His teachings. Peace, Fr. The 2019 Catholic Ministries
Appeal has begun. It is the single annual appeal the Diocese makes for funds
to be distributed to various ministries, services and agencies across Long
Island. Please be generous in your support and pray for the success of the
appeal.

classes this coming week due to the public school "winter recess".
