English Summary
of Fr. Jiha Lim’s Third Sunday of Advent Homily
The recent canonization of St. John Henry
Newman has brought to consciousness many of his insights that are valuable to
our own time. In his theology, he speaks of the distinction between
“absorption” and “assimilation.”
In an attempt to “fit in” to a contemporary
culture, there have been Christian leaders who tried to present Christianity as
something compatible with a given culture. This approach will make Christianity
appear to be attractive and useful, but unfortunately, this way of presenting
the faith will fail to create true Christians dedicated and committed to the
Gospel way of life. It would “fit into” our society, but it will have little or
nothing to contribute to the people. This is the “absorption” model.
On the other hand, the method of assimilation
is dramatically different. According to St. John Henry Newman, the Church
“assimilates” or takes in from the contemporary culture whatever would be
helpful for evangelization, but completely disregards and abandons whatever is
not compatible with the divine Revelation. For example, the Church may use
technology and other creative ways of the
modern world to communicate the Gospel teachings more effectively, but she will
never water down the actual content of the Gospel to satisfy or please the
demand of the modern world.
In today’s Gospel reading John the Baptist sees
Jesus approaching him and cries out, “Behold the Lamb of God.” In effect John
was identifying Jesus as the Passover lamb that was sacrificed as a sin
offering every year. It is John’s Gospel
which right from the beginning will make clear that Jesus is the very Word of
God, the divine Logos who has become flesh to save the entire universe. It is
God himself who is the true “suffering servant” who is taking on to himself the
entirely of human brokenness. This is the shocking revelation of Christianity
which is why it cannot be reduced to some expression of a cultural insight.
This is an eternal, permanent and unchangeable message that calls for a radical
and dramatic response from those believers who are truly dedicated and
committed to the faith.
Yes, we can assimilate insights from a culture
when they are compatible with divine Revelation, but we must still see the role
of the Church as “teacher” and not predominately the one being taught. Yes, the
Church members, especially the clergy, should accept criticism and correction
from society. But they should be criticized for failing to live up to the
Gospel, NOT for teaching and preaching about the Gospel. May we always remember
that the Church has a message not reducible to culture, which she must proclaim
courageously and endlessly. May the Lord bless you, and all your loved ones,
especially your family, Amen.
